\u0e9e\u0eb2\u0eaa\u0eb2\u0e88\u0eb4\u0e99Vice President Bounnhang Vorachit has praised a major local tapioca producer, the Lao Indochina Group Tapioca Factory, for its cooperation with farmers on raw material production and processing for export.<\/p>\n

Mr Sengmaly Sengvatthana (\u00a0left\u00a0) joins Vientiane officials and local authorities to release fish fingerlings into Nonghan marsh.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Vientiane Times (July 9, 2011) — Lao Indochina Group and local authorities in Pakngum district, Vientiane, released 500,000 fish fingerlings into Nonghan marsh in Natham village, to mark National Aquatic and Wildlife Day.<\/p>\n

LIG Chairman Mr Sengmaly Sengvatthana said the company had been supporting fish releases for three years now, because they wanted to help preserve the natural environment for future generations.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince 2009, our company has released 1.5 million fingerlings into the marsh at a cost of more than 900 million kip. We also plan to support fish releases in future years,\u201d he said.
\n\u201cWe also plan to upgrade road access into Natham village, where we have cassava plantations to supply our factory which employs local people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Sengmaly said the factory has the capacity to produce 320 tonnes of tapioca per day, but currently produces 250 to 300 tonnes per day, due to a lack of raw materials.<\/p>\n

Natham villagers are keen to establish more cassava plantations to supply the factory. This was good for everybody, he said, because it would provide the villagers with extra income and the company would save money on transport costs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe factory isn’t running to capacity yet, so we hope to extend the plantations from 7,000 hectares at present to more than 10,500 hectares next year. We are encouraging local people to establish cassava plantations in 12 districts, in Vientiane and also Borikhamxay and Vientiane provinces,\u201d Mr Sengmaly said.<\/p>\n

Mr S engmaly was joined in Natham village by the Deputy Mayor of Vientiane Mr Somvandy Nathavong and the Governor of Pakngum district Mr Chiva Xaytong for the ceremony to release the fish into Nonghan marsh.
\nMr Chiva said the Lao government has designated July 13 as a national day for releasing both fingerlings and fully grown fish into the wild.<\/p>\n

National Aquatic and Wildlife Day aims to raise public awareness about the need to preserve biodiversity by protecting the natural environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cDistrict authorities have released 3 million fingerlings into Nonghan marsh since 2004, in addition to the ones given to us by Lao Indochina,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Chiva said it was important to replenish fish stocks in local rivers and marshes, as many local people depend on them for their food and livelihoods.<\/p>\n
